Dancing with Matt Harding, of course! (Keep reading for the video!)
Serendipity has a funny way of teaching us life lessons: just days before on vacation, I was at the beach with my wife, dancing (like Matt) on the tidal pools. Not knowing what was yet to transpire.
I hardly ever read the paper news, but this morning, when I picked up the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in front of our hotel room when we were checking out, I read that Matt was going to be at Wide World Books & Maps. It wasn't a feature-length article, just a brief blurb on a back page, which made it all the more surprising.
I knew we had to be there, and so, on the way back to Seattle, we stumbled upon more serendipity: the zany Archie McPhee toy store, which I wanted to visit but didn't lookup its address. As my wife and I walked down the street after parking to take a break on our travels, I saw the signature sign light up, and moments later…
I became the proud owner of a Seth Godin action figure! Since Godin is a viral marketing pioneer and Matt's dancing videos are among the most popular YouTube videos of all time, therein lies a connection!
(Maybe there are no coincidences, just events set in motion we need to be observant of and pilot so that future wonders can happen.)
Following a walk in a nearby park, here we were. Matt and his girlfriend Melissa — who works as a recruiter for Google and has a knack for helping Matt find talent for his vids! — were present, and he showed the intimate and rapt crowd the 3rd, newest video he did of dancing around the world with local people. It was silly, touching, and wonderful, and the hi-rez was much better quality than this YouTube version. Nevertheless, the goodness shines through.
A Q&A session followed and, as my wife astutely points out, Matt was tremendously generous with his time, answering queries charismatically with an amazing dose of depth and humor. Great questions from the audience too, like whether he needed extra pages for his passport (yes), what his affiliation is with the UN (working on a project to give 100 laptops and aid poor children), and how he got legal clearance to film everyone (he pulled up a contact sheet of many headshots showing the many dancers from a scene).
He uses Sony Vegas (my choice too) to edit his videos, and I noted with geeky glee that he uses a vertical Windows taskbar, like myself.
My turn to interrogate eventually came, and I excitedly asked Matt whether he had seen the Second Life homage to his dancing — yes!
(There've actually been several, including Carnah's, Louleen's, and Socks'; Artilect's was the first.) My 2nd Q, naturally, was a digest recant of my earlier serendipity, and whether I'd have the honor of dancing with Matt! AND HE SAID YES, OMG.
Matt mentioned he's working on a book with still imagery from his adventures and a short story for each country shown. He was also quizzed about whether he'd make a DVD, and he considers it interesting but isn't the kind of guy who gets alight when a camera is on him for longer periods of time than dancing.
What an awesome guy! He made everyone feel special and I'm totally fanboying this one out more than Knowles ever could, but I just had to share. The bookshop proprietors were kindly too, welcoming each & everyone in. Special thanx goes to my wife for ze filming.
My friends of teh awesome and enemies of the useless, I'm locationally back home and will be answering questions on my blog and playing in Second Life… but still on vacay, and not officially working until next Monday. I have more stories about my lives coming up in the days and weeks ahead, right on this here blog. So catch you around, and keep on dancing!

haha.. this is awesome. i actually started doing a machinima version of this a while ago and then got sidetracked with being overseas and getting married. i have about 20 clips done and eventually will sew them together into a fun little video. but i love that you met matt! i was a youtube baby and matt's video was one of the first big things they did, so that's totally fun!
Fair enough, Matt's worthy of as much fanboying as can be
and dash it if there isn't a tear in my eye. Global unity in happy silliness!
Awesome! What a great bit of luck. I still get a bit choked up when I watch Matt's videos - don't quite know why. Maybe it's just the fact that it's so real and simple. It's a glimpse at the globe that's different from the mainstream media views of doom, gloom, and warfare.
Another leg up on the ladder of JOY!
Looks like you had enough fun for all of us.
My goodness, Torley! Your video snapshot is awesome and all but, here's the thing - I'd never heard of or seen this man and his work before now. Thanks to this one blog post of yours I've chuckled at amusing action figures, been slowly awestruck by a video phenomenon I'd not witnessed before, and then shared your joy (and a little envy) at dancing with Mr. Harding.
In short? Your blog just made my day. Favourite post yet. ^_^
That was awesome, thanks Torley! hope you had a great trip!
@thaumata: Oh I'd like to see your film when it's done! What you mentioned made me recall that Matt said he did the first video before YouTube was ever launched, where it became popular later — it's hard to believe so much has happened in 3-or-so years.
@DreddPirateBob: Totally.
@Vlad: I definitely think that's the magic of it. It's also interesting to note how many of the most popular YouTube videos are of very simple things: humans speaking to the camera, dancing, singing.
@2B: *keeps climbing*
@Writer: I'm always one to share the fun around!
@Vidal: Ha! You have now been touched! Glad I could spark that in you! =D
@Phoenixa: I most certainly did!
Another thing I didn't mention earlier was that we (my wife and I) were going to go home early until we found out about this, and basically hung around until Matt's 7 PM appearance. More than worth it, tho.
OMGGGG I saw Matt's video a while back and it cracked me up, in a good way. This man is so blessed to be able to do this and see all he has seen. Not to mention brilliant, inspiring and positive. Like you! <3 You were destined to meet him! It was DESTINYYYY!
Ah that is awesome!
I'm very happy now. So cool to see legends of our time coming together!
That's really awesome
Also, surprised to hear of someone else in the world who uses a vertical task bar, I always have to use it like that because I have a million windows open
I love the Celestine Prophecy.
Oh my…. Torley's seen my video and referenced to it?
*faints*
Friendly Greetings Torley !
Awesome, Torley and Matt dancing side by side
As an educator I have used Matt's videos to teach geography in a fun way, it proved successfull because that guy is always popular with kids !
And a very special thanks to you Torley for enlightening my experience in SL.
)
(In fact I discovered SL by stumbling upon your videos on youtube
Best Regards from France.
Incredible. I'm packing to go to SL Community Convention and I see Torley dancing with another crazy man and I loved it and felt that world community. Set and setting for the weekend. Thanks.
@Damien: Hey, great minds think alike.
@Socks: For sure!
@Angus: That is very cool! And glad to hear about how you heard about me!
@Herne: Hope you're having fun @ SLCC! Ahhhh.
Wow and super-wow! Posters above have already said it, but what a joyful twist of fate to have 2 outstanding 'joysharers' (cant think of a better description) doing the happy dance together.
I was missing your vid tuts Torley and thought I might find a clue here on you blog (should have looked earlier I guess…) and here you were!
Glad you had a FAB holiday!
A truly "Internet" moment.
^ So true, so true.
@feeli0: I <3 that word, "joysharer"!
