Zorba the gesture

2008-08-09

It’s tragic how prejudice can tarnish our lives and block us from valuable experiences. Case in point: years ago, I was reading the National Enquirer and paid attention to one headline which screamed: “ZORBA THE CREEP”, commenting on Anthony Quinn’s alleged infidelity. As a result, when I was offered to watch his landmark film Zorba the Greek some years later, I firmly said, “No! He’s a creep!”

Keeping in mind that was when I was not yet 10 years old, I noticed several very fun Second Life videos showing a gesture based on a famous Zorba dance scene, complete with perky music.

The first comes to us courtesy of Kevin and FoxSan @ Here, cute creature avatars with a dose of flycam… green + pink in full effect! I am pleased.

Soon enough, I found out Phaylen Fairchild & Poid Mahovlich put together their own recess excursion while organizing Burning Life:

Lastly, Eshi Otawara posted this some months back on WeGame, complete with a custom pink-tinted WindLight sky, for a twisted sort of Easter:

Closer inspection reveals Eshi referenced this at my 2008-01-11 Office Hour!

Have you seen any other Zorba’s-dance-in-SL videos? It’s funny how a classic movie, filtered through the absurdity of a Second Life gesture (ending in a raucous “Woooooooo!”) has transmitted a kernel of appeal from its source to me at long last.

I’ve seen numerous gestures, many based on Internet memes, wind their way through Infohubs to be spread through social gatherings across the grid, but this one’s particularly well-coordinated across multiple steps and appears to synchronize well.

In another page out of history, you may recall one of my first video tutorials made exactly that point about creating complex, chained gestures — my, how things come around.

Adding to the fun, this one with six "Greeks," in a most infamous spot: The Corn Field!
